Minutes of the October BAMSAR meeting, held at Bayport. Thanks to Rick Magale for his hospitality.
Present: Bayport, Blue Point, Patchogue, Bellport, South Country, Mastic, Center Moriches, Group Moriches, Eastport,
and Westhampton Beach.
Old Business: Discussion was held on the merits of the dye packets. Todd had voiced some concern over whether or
not the helo could see through the dye, in order to locate the victim. Divers apparently couldn’t see through the
silt kicked up by the surf, and it was thought doubtful that the helo would have been able to locate the victim
in those conditions. Dye helped shore based personnel make an estimate of where the victim was generally located.
Some debate still remains over this issue.
New Business: Center Moriches drill, held on Sunday, the 6th, went well. Favorable comments were presented.
A suggestion was made, regarding having a series of small drills, every other month, with a large multi-casualty
drill, later on next year. All agreed that this would be a good idea. Greg was asked if he would plan same.
Another suggestion was made, regarding giving DRI a scenario, and letting them propose a scene and drill for the
Light Salvage course. This was tabled for further discussion at the November meeting.
Group was asked if they would like to set up a search pattern course for boat operators, sometime in the February/
March time frame. This would be the first under the new international search and rescue protocols.
Discussion was held regarding equipment (masks and tanks for quick splash-and-dash operations involving surface
rescue swimmers), and what would make a good “starter” dive truck.
Next year’s meeting calendar will be made up in December. If your unit wishes to hold a monthly meeting, please
bring the date(s) you wish to host, to the November meeting.
Next meeting will be held on Thursday, 14 November, at 1930, at Mastic FD.
