BAMSAR MINUTES
Minutes of the April meeting, held at Center Moriches. Thanks to Asst. Chief Jim Murray for his hospitality.
Present: Bayport, Bellport, Mastic Beach, Mastic, Center Moriches, Coast Guard Group Moriches, Eastport, Westhampton
Beach, Southampton Town Chiefs.
Training:
Dive Rescue I: We don't have enough people to fill the class! We currently only have 10 people. We need 15.
This may get scrubbed if no more takers. You don't need to be a diver to take this course. You can be shore-side
personnel, also. Faxes inviting East End Departments have also been sent out.
Dive Rescue II: Paperwork is here for hosting. Westhampton Beach and Eastport have expressed interest, and
have tentatively committed together, a total of 8 personnel. This course will entail current diving (September),
and salvage diving (October). If your unit is interested in this course, bring back a firm number of committed
participants by the May meeting.
Old Business:
Vacant FC-29 (Dive Coordinator) spot: Dave Fischler is waiting on Jim Trappen's resignation. Paul Massey is unofficially
the new coordinator. This organization is committed to helping Paul out in any way it can, including linking up
all dive teams in the County into one network, through exchanges of ideas, training, and cooperation.
New Business:
Coast Guard Open House; Saturday, 18 May (rain date 19th), from noon to 4 p.m. at all Long Island CG stations.
Adults must have positive identification, and show it at the gate. Anyone wishing to bring their Department's
equipment, should contact Lt(jg). Marc Sennick at Group Moriches, (or the Operations Petty Officer at other stations),
with the names of the personnel who will be attending. The names should be in to Marc (or the OPO) not less than
one week prior to the event, in order to obtain the necessary clearances. Marc can be reached at 395-4411, or by
e-mail: Msennick@GruMor.uscg.mil .
The local County Legislators ask that we attend the Legislature meeting on the 16th of April to voice support
for keeping the medivac helo out at the base. The legislators from the West End don't want to spend the money to
keep the helo at Gabreski, despite the fact it takes 20 minutes longer to fly to the East End from MacArthur Field,
than it does out of Gabreski Field.
Speaking of helos- No money allocated for a CG helo this year, so we won't be getting it.
Center Moriches Fire Department scuba team to be online by Memorial Day.
Tom is experiencing problems uploading minutes onto the web. Tim is looking into it with the company.
The idea of patches and ID cards was discussed. Tim's looking into getting a price. Bob Jaeger suggested that
a patch be given to each person who successfully completes either the Dive Rescue I, or Dive Rescue II course.
Next meeting: 09 May, at Westhampton Beach FD, 1930.
