BAMSAR MINUTES
Minutes of the September, 2006, BAMSAR meeting, held at Hagerman. Thanks to Chief Miller and his dive team for their hospitality.
Present: Hagerman, Patchogue, Bellport, South Country, Mastic Beach, Center Moriches and Tim Dahlen.
Excused: Ed Michels (EHTMP), Bayport, Mastic and Coast Guard.
Old Business:
Dive Rescue 1 course was again discussed. Brookhaven has 5 divers, Hagerman has 2 divers, and Center Moriches has 1 diver, needing this course. Mastic Beach has 3 divers in basic training at H.D.C., and would like them to get into the class, if possible. The course is planned for the Columbus Day weekend (5-8 October). The course will be Thursday and Friday nights, starting at 1930, with full day sessions on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 0700. Get your vouchers in to Dive Rescue International, by the end of the month. DRI will not accept money at the start of class. The price is expected to be $380/man.
Boat operator training for running Moriches Inlet was discussed. Center Moriches is interested. John Foley will talk with Ed Michels further on this.
Sector Long Island Sound will be getting back with John F. in the near future, regarding request for a tabletop drill.
New Business:
Hampton Dive Center is holding a cleanup dive at Wildwood Lake, at the intersection of County Road 51, and Lake Avenue, in Riverhead, this Sunday, 17 September, starting at 1000 hrs. Meet in the parking lot of the Wildwood Lanes bowling alley. Hampton Dive will be providing refreshments.
Mastic Beach and Mastic are looking into grants for the purchase of jet skis and sleds, along with appropriate training, for use in the surf at Smith Point. More info at the next meeting.
Speaking of Smith Point…. The outer beach is pretty much washed out. Use the Burma Road for any over-sand responses to the Inlet.
There is a proposal on the drawing board, for a Coast Guard checklist for all rescue boats and dive teams. This would ensure that all required rescue equipment be onboard and serviceable. Joe Gonnelly will check into this further.
