BAMSAR MINUTES
Minutes of the October, 2006, BAMSAR meeting, held at Bayport. Thanks to Chief Feinberg and his dive team for their hospitality.
Present: Bayport, Hagerman, Patchogue, Bellport, Brookhaven, Mastic Beach, and Center Moriches.
Excused: Ed Michels (EHTMP), Jim Bowra (SCSD) and Coast Guard.
Old Business:
Dive Rescue 1 course was again discussed. Those who attended felt it was a very good course. Many thanks to Jim Bowra for teaching the class. Jim has indicated that the Sheriff’s Office may try to do a course in the spring.
One new safety item, concerning rescue diving, is that a chest harness is now required, for the tending line carabiner to be clipped into, instead of clipping it to the BCD. OSHA and NFPA regulations are being phased into rescue diving.
Tabletop drill: No report.
Surfboat operator class: No report. John will get back with Ed Michels, closer to spring.
Rescue Boat Checklist: No report.
New Business:
More on dive classes: Bayport led a discussion of a comparison between DRI, and Lifeguard Systems. A recommendation was made to check out both, compare both, and to standardize to a common system, BAMSAR-wide. Patchogue has decided to standardize with LGS.
Patchogue will be holding an LGS Dive Awareness Class, on Saturday, 02 December. This is an 8 hour class. It is strongly recommended that Chiefs, officers, other potential incident commanders and Line Tenders, take this class.
Discussion was held on a recommendation, put forward by Patchogue, that the monthly meetings be moved to a Sunday, and rotated around, as is done now. A short meeting would be held first, followed by a dive. This would accomplish two things- conducting business, and enable all the membership of BAMSAR to dive together, increasing familiarity and proficiency. Please bring this back to your teams and discuss this, and bring your recommendations to the November meeting, at Mastic.
Bayport is looking to put together an ice dive class, and is looking to see if anyone is interested. Please contact Barry (E-mail: Barry@Lipskyenterprises.com), or Jim (E-mail:Waterrat31423@yahoo.com), if you’d like to take this course.
Bayport had its new dive truck on display. It’s quite an impressive machine. We wish them good luck with it. If you want more information, please contact Chief Feinberg, or Jim Rice. Thank you to all the team members who took us on a tour of the truck.
Remember to bring to the November meeting, the dates that you can hold a monthly meeting. Thanks.
