February BAMSAR MINUTES

Minutes of the February, 2006, BAMSAR meeting, held at Brookhaven. Thanks to Mike Banovich for his hospitality.

Present: Bayport, Patchogue, Bellport, Brookhaven, Mastic, Mastic Beach, Center Moriches.

Excused: Hagerman and T. Dahlen.

Old Business:

Dive Rescue 1 course in May. Dates are 19, 20, 21, but, we are going to try and see if we can get the course adjusted to Thursday and Friday nights, then all day Saturday/Sunday (No answer yet, from DRI on this). We need 15 people, as a minimum. Please try to get us a number of attendees by no later than the March meeting, so we can let DRI know. Cost is approximately $250/man.

Anyone with outstanding dues, is asked to please pay them by next meeting.

New Business:

Bill Biondi has approached Lifeguard Systems about a rapid deployment surf-entry program, for June. The program would run Thursday night, and all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Barry thought that LGS might not accept our DRI qualifications for this, but Bill said that LGS had written him, stating that they would. Both gentlemen will check this out together and get back to us.

John Foley is going to meet with the Commander and Executive Officer of Sector Field Office Moriches, on 03 March, to discuss what the future holds for the Coast Guard-BAMSAR partnership, once the command center is shifted to New Haven.

Eastport will no longer be able to fulfill it’s meeting commitment. Therefore, the September meeting is “open”, and needs a sponsor. Any unit that is interested in taking Eastport’s place, please contact the Secretary.

May’s meeting will be held at Hampton Dive Center, Route 24 (Flanders Rd.), Riverhead.

A resource request/survey will be sent to each BAMSAR unit, in the hard-copy minutes package. Please ensure that the survey is filled out, as soon as possible. We will be passing this info on to the County and the Coast Guard, for inclusion in their databases, as well as the FEMA database. Brookhaven Town Technical Rescue Team would like to include us in their database, as well.

Barry Lipsky (Bayport) is looking to become an instructor for Lifeguard Systems. He would join Jim Bowra (Suffolk Sheriff), as our organizational instructors.

Training:

Brookhaven will be training in SCCC Brentwood pool on 05 march at 1300. All welcome.

Dive Rescue 1 will be held 19, 20 & 21 May, 2006. We need a host.
