August BAMSAR MINUTES

Minutes of the August, 2005, BAMSAR meeting, held at Brookhaven. Thanks to Chief Don Prince for his hospitality.

Present: Patchogue, Hagerman, South Country, Brookhaven, Mastic Beach, Mastic, Center Moriches.

Excused: Bellport.

Old Business:

As there was no July meeting, the following Old Business was brought forward:

Dive Rescue 2 (Columbus Day weekend; 08, 09, 10 October) is still on, and Tim has asked Dive Rescue if we can get this to be a boat-based course, instead of shore-based. We need numbers of attendees as soon as possible. So far, Mastic Beach has 2; Hagerman, 2; Brookhaven, 4; Mastic, 1; Center Moriches, 1. If you have anyone attending, or know of anyone from another dive team, interested in attending, please get that information to Tim Dahlen, as soon as possible. His phone number is 631-325 8333. Please leave a message on his machine. Or, you can contact John Foley, via e-mail, at: o_foghladha@yahoo.com. Any unit wishing to volunteer the use of their boat, please let us know, as well.

Areas of Operational Responsibility were again discussed. Please get the area that your organization covers, mapped out on a copy of nautical chart 12352, and get it to Bill Biondi, as soon as you can, so we can get those copies to County, and Coast Guard S.F.O. Moriches.

Cards for line tending signals were discussed. There’s a problem with the ink not sticking properly to the cards, so the situation will be researched to find a better solution.

New Business:

Greg noticed that there were a couple on-water incidents that were taken by PD, but the Fire and Ambulance sides of the house weren’t notified in a timely manner. We need to revisit this with the powers-that-be, and get the inter-agency cooperation back.

We need to introduce ourselves to the new FRES Commissioner, and invite him to our drills. Tim and John will work on that.

Tim is going to check into how much we have on account with Dive Rescue International, and ask for a motion at the next meeting, to spend some of that money (up to $600) on 4-5 inflatable life jackets, that could be used at our drills, in case one of the attendees/spectators/instructors does not arrive with one.

Scott P. made the suggestion that when we do the DR 1 course, see if we can schedule it on a Thursday and Friday night, for classroom/skills, and all day Saturday and Sunday. He said he knew of a number of divers who would like to take the course, but were not able to take the Friday off. They could, however, make the course, if it were scheduled as he suggests. Tim will check into that.
