BAMSAR MINUTES

Minutes of the April, 2005, BAMSAR meeting, held at Center Moriches. Thanks to Chiefs Madigan and Renzetti for their hospitality.

Present: Patchogue, Bellport, Brookhaven, Mastic Beach, Mastic, Center Moriches.

Excused: Eastport.

Old Business:

Dive Rescue 1 is all set up for Brookhaven for the 20th-22nd of May. Registrations must be in by 29 April. We need 7 more people in order to fill the class.

Dive Rescue 2 (Columbus Day weekend; 08, 09, 10 October) tentatively has a sponsor. Pending approval, Center Moriches will host.

Clark brought laminated signal card samples to the meeting. He stated that, in order to produce them, the cost would be $125 for the original plate, and 100 cards. A motion was made, seconded and carried to expend no more than $375 for 300 cards.

Updated BAMSAR matrix will go out with the minutes this month. If you have any corrections beyond what’s there, please let the Secretary know.

Boating Safety Week activities: No reply from the Auxiliary. Nothing further.

Bill will be attending the Brookhaven Town Chiefs meeting at Wading River. He will talk with the Chiefs of Miller Place, Rocky Point, Sound Beach, Mount Sinai, and Stony Brook, to find out their interest in the Dive Rescue 1 qualification course in May.

Scott Rosato reported that he didn’t receive a reply from Ed Michaels on the issue of boat operator/surf entry training, so he asked Lifeguard Systems for literature, and a proposal. The course would be a three day affair, and Mastic would host. He will get back to us as soon as he receives a class schedule and pricing info.

Bill Biondi is in continuing discussions with the Center and East Moriches Chiefs, with regard to rescue responses on the western half of Moriches Bay. He’ll get back with any information, at the conclusion of discussions.

New Business:

Discussion was held in reference to the drowning at Bayport. Because Bayport was not in attendance, we didn’t have enough information to include a “Lessons Learned” entry into the minutes.

Discussion was held on piecing together an underwater communications cache. Hampton Dive Center recommends that we go with a hard-wire setup, with adapters for a “Buddy Phone” hookup. Buddy Phones are $1195.50/pair; the console, $695; and the headset, $250. Scott Rosato will research the kit, and grants that are available for this.

Training:

Dive Rescue 1: Brookhaven FD, host. $340/man. Dates are 20, 21 & 22 May.

Atlantic Diver: Advanced Breathing Air course: TBA.

Next meeting: Thursday, 12 May, 2005, at 1930, at Hampton Dive Center.
